George Toews

Peacefully on Saturday, October 14, 2017 George Toews passed away with family by his side at the Portage District General Hospital at the age of 79 years.

Predeceased by his daughter Cheryl; son Kevin, Father Wilhelm; mother Lena; brothers Harry and John; sisters Ruth, and Helen; and all his half-brothers and half-sisters.

Left to celebrate George’s life are his wife Donna of 54 years; daughters Lynda (Robert) Froese, Carole (Vern) Froese, Janice (Dean) Ducharme; grandchildren Jasmine, Julia (special friend Josh), Tyler, and Chance; brothers Ed (Doreen) Toews and David (Marilyn) Toews; brother-in- law Ken (Kathy) Nicholls; sister-in-law Rita (Dave) Brandner; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and self-proclaimed favorites Iona and Randal; many friends and extended family.

George was born in Togo Saskatchewan November 24, 1937. The family lived in many communities in Southern Manitoba before settling in Marquette, MB in 1950.

George worked construction, and he had a passion for trucking.  Johnny, Archie, Lee, Les, and Austin McRae were very special in George’s life and he loved driving for McRae’s and sharing his lunch with Austin.

Thank you Judy Shirtliff and Chad Bodnarchuk for taking part in George’s celebration of life, also Debbie Janzen, Bonita Miedema, Dr. Felsch, Dr. St. Goddard, Dr. Wilkes, the nurses and aides at Portage Hospital.

A celebration of George’s life will take place on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at the Oakville Community Hall at 2:00pm. 

Donations may be made in George’s name to Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation, 1155 Notre Dame Ave, Winnipeg, MB R3G 3G1 or to Central Plains Cancer Services 318 E Saskatchewan Ave, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 0K8.

A tree will be planted and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel 204-857-4021.
