Donald "Don" Kitchen

July 21, 1940 — June 28, 2019

With his family by his side, Don Kitchen passed away on Friday, June 28, 2019 at the Lorne Memorial Hospital in Swan Lake, MB at the age of 78 years.

Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 55 years Dolores; daughter Christa Gouchie (Darren) of Grande Prairie, AB and granddaughter Haley Gouchie; sister Marie (Dar) Alford; brother Bob Kitchen; nieces and nephews Lori (Phil) Carpenter, Stephen Alford, Corri Muir, Tim Kitchen and Ted Kitchen; sister-in-law Yvonne Mazurat; brothers-in-law Dennis and Gary Mazurat; as well as many extended family and friends.

Don was predeceased by his parents Ted and Rachel Kitchen; brother John Kitchen and sister-in-law Irene Kitchen.

Don was born July 21, 1940 on the family farm in Oakville MB in the house where he lived his entire life. He attended Beautiful Valley School and Oakville High School.  Don began farming immediately after he left school and farmed the rest of his life. Farming was his whole life! Over the years he served on the Oakville Hall Board and the local Pool Elevator board. In his younger years during the winter he enjoyed curling at the local curling rink. Don had a soft spot for animals and birds, and spoiled his present cat Sonny, with treats and affection. Don married Dolores Mazurat in June of 1964 and their daughter, Christa, was born in August 1970. He continued to farm right up until his diagnosis in 2016 of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy.

Dolores and family wish to express their gratitude to the nurses and staff at Lorne Memorial Hospital for the quality of care given with unfailing compassion, dignity and respect for this last leg of Don’s journey of life.  They never once forgot that Don was a person and not just a patient. Also a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Portage General Hospital ETU ward for their care and compassion during his stay there.

A Memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, July 4, 2019 at Knox United Church, Oakville, MB led by Shirley McLaren. Private family interment will take place at Oakville Cemetery.
