Efigenia "Effie" Ukno

September 20, 1941 — December 8, 2020

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Efigenia (Effie) Ukno on Tuesday, December 8, 2020.  Effie passed away at the age of 79 at the Charleswood Care Centre due to her existing diabetes condition.

She will be lovingly remembered by her son Ryan Ukno, daughter in-law Maribeth, granddaughter Maryan all from Winnipeg and her sister Anita Alcordo, from Ohio, USA along with her many nieces and nephews from the US and Philippines.  She will be greatly missed and remembered as well by the Daughters of Charity from the Immaculate Heart of Mary College.

She was predeceased by her husband Tony Ukno, her father Bonifacio and mother Margarita, her 3 brothers, Faustino Alcordo, Leonardo Alcordo & Francisco Alcordo and her 2 sisters Polly Dillon and Elena West.

She was born in Cebu, Philippines September 20, 1941.  She studied at Immaculate Heart of Mary College where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce.  She worked as a secretary there for many years.

She moved to Canada in 1978 and married Tony Ukno where they lived in Portage la Prairie, MB.  She began her career working at the Manitoba Developmental Centre for over 20 years as a Medical Secretary.   She enjoyed travelling to the Philippines and the US, taking photos, shopping, watching TV, making new friends and loved listening to music, especially Ryan’s violin music.  During her final years, she loved playing with and spoiling her granddaughter, Maryan.

After cremation, a small funeral service was held for her close family on December 16th in St. Gerard’s Parish, Winnipeg.   Burial of her remains will take place on July 30th at 1:30 pm at Hillside Cemetery, Portage la Prairie and all are welcome to join.
