Mildred Kitson

July 10, 1922 — July 15, 2020

Peacefully following a brief illness, on Wednesday, July 15, 2020, 5 days past her 98th birthday, Mildred Kitson passed away at Portage District General Hospital.

Predeceased by her parents Johnny Rohmier in 1948, Florence Rohmier in 1999, and her husband Archie in 1971, she leaves to mourn her children Jonnette (Merv) and Richard; 5 grandchildren Ryan, Shannon (David), Glen (Tawnia), Jamie and Jay; 2 great grandchildren Cora and Oliver, as well as numerous friends and relatives including special cousins Susan Campbell and Marguerite MacBey

A lifelong resident of Portage la Prairie, as a young adult, she worked in her parent’s bakery, Portage City Bakery. She then started a flower shop, Mil-Jeanne Flowers which still operates to this day. She sold the flower shop following the birth of her first child so that she could focus on her family. She was self-employed as a bookkeeper while raising her family, doing the accounts for several small businesses around the area.

In her younger days she was an avid golfer and bowler. As a southpaw, she entered the Portage Golf Club’s Left-Handed tournament one year, correctly pointing out that it was for left-handed golfers not only male left-handed golfers. She was also one of the top provincial 10-pin bowlers amassing a house full of bowling trophies over the years that she donated to the youth bowling leagues.

She instilled a love of and a passion for education in her children. Of her 2 children and 5 grandchildren there are 3 teachers, 2 engineers, a pharmacist, and a chartered accountant. In her later years she was a resident of Dalton Grove where she used her accounting skills to support the tenant’s association. She was a great fan of jigsaw puzzles and the socializing that went along with the assembly of them. She was thrilled to have known her great-grandchildren and she took great delight in learning of the accomplishments, travels and antics of her grandchildren which she would then pass on to her fellow residents.

There will be a private family interment at Hillside Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Kitson/Rohmier Fund - Community Foundation of Portage & District, 206 Saskatchewan Ave East, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 0K9 or a charity of your choice.

A tree will be planted in memory and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel.  www.mckenziesportagefuneralchapel.com
