Arthur Ernest Ammeter

April 14, 1943 — September 2, 2025

With great sadness we announce that our husband, father, grand-father, uncle, cousin, and friend, Arthur “Art” Ammeter, left us at the age of 82 to be with his Saviour and Lord on September 2, 2025 at the Portage District General Hospital.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Debbie Ammeter (Mostowy) of Elie, Manitoba; his children: Carly (Glen) Nowell of Bedford, NS and Rebecca (Mark) Corrigan of Saskatoon, SK; his grandchildren: Sylvia and James Nowell and Keziah, Nizanna and Biruk Corrigan.

Art was predeceased by his parents, Ernest and Margaret Ammeter, his only brother Laurence Ammeter and his in-laws John and Georgene Mostowy.

Art was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and lived on the family farm in Starbuck, Manitoba until 1953 when the family moved to the Netley, Manitoba area and started a dairy operation. His early education took place in Starbuck, Netley, Petersfield and finally Selkirk where he completed his High School. During his education he was influenced by several great teachers who inspired him to go into teaching. He attended the University of Manitoba where he obtained his Education Degree. Art taught school for 32 years at the High School, Junior High School and French Immersion Elementary levels. Of these, the elementary placement was his favourite.

Art first met his wife-to-be, Debbie, during his first year of teaching and then again through a 4-H Club where he was a leader. Their mutual love for animals sparked a relationship that resulted in 51 years of marriage.

Art had many interests and hobbies including target shooting along with the reloading of his own ammunition. He loved the precision required to get it just right. Along with Debbie, he enjoyed showing both their horses and their dogs. His passion, however, was reading and writing both prose and poetry. He successfully submitted many short stories and poems to local contests and wrote for the Lutheran publication “Eternity for Today” quite regularly. His proudest achievement was his placing in a Haiku contest sponsored by Japan Airlines where out of over 40,000 entrants he placed in the top 200.

A man of great faith, Art loved to be part of the lay leadership circle and especially enjoyed sharing his faith through his Sunday messages.
