On November 21, 2025 Barrie Nichol passed away at the age of 82 years at the Portage and District General Hospital in Portage la Prairie.
He was predeceased by his parents, Gordon and Hilda Nichol and younger brother, Douglas of Poplar Bluff, his second wife, Betty Ann of Portage, and granddaughter, Emily of Swift Current, Saskatchewan. To mourn his passing are sister, Sharron (Bob) Lee of Chicago, Illinois, brother, Harold (Joanne) Nichol of Portage la Prairie, Barrie’s children, daughter, Sherry (Wade) Loose of Waldeck, Saskatchewan and son, Darryl (Carla) Nichol and grandchildren, Suri and Kale of Hinton, Alberta. He will also be missed by his stepchildren, Lori Ann (Kim) Menke of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and Loren (Cathy) Lang of Swift Current, Saskatchewan and 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
In 1967, Barrie married Lorraine Watson of Rossendale and lived in the Poplar Bluff area. They parted ways in 1985 and Barrie subsequently married Betty Ann Lang of Swift Current, Saskatchewan in 1991. They lived on an acreage north of Portage, where Barrie resided until his passing. Growing up, Barrie attended Poplar Bluff School, and throughout his life, he enjoyed many activities including cooking, driving fast cars with friends from MacGregor and High Bluff, hunting with his Dad, brother, brother-in-law and his other hunting buddies, like Jackie Anderson and many others. He also enjoyed snowmobiling, four wheeling, camping and having a beer with family and friends.
Barrie had a varied career life including working on the family farm, working at Campbell Soup Company in Portage, and working as a cook for the Canadian National Railway. Following in his Father’s footsteps, he took upgrading and obtained his 3rd class Power Engineer, after which he worked at Fort Osborne Barracks in Winnipeg, the Pan American Airlines Missile Range in Churchill, Manitoba, and at Station 34 at Edwin for TransCanada Pipelines and subsequently as owner of his own Pipeline Consulting Company, BW Nichol Ventures Ltd.
In addition to his employment career and his yard maintenance, Barrie enjoyed crafting and was very talented in creating rod iron crafts, like plant hangers, candleholders, garden angels, etc. He and Betty Ann enjoyed selling their crafts around the province and in their home-based Craft Store.
The family would like express gratitude for the friendship and support Barrie received from good friends and his wonderful neighbours. We especially want to thank Warren Scott and Kim Poschenrieder for their friendship and support to Barrie over many years.
