Bertha Moffat, a cherished soul whose life was a testament to love and family, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2025, at the age of 84 with her family by her side. Bertha was born on November 13, 1940, in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba where she remained all her life. She lived a vibrant life filled with love, laughter, and the joy of family.
Predeceased by her husband Keith Moffat; parents Wilfred and Elizabeth (Betty) Houle; grandson Kirty Cousins; great-grandchildren Rodney and Ryder Cousins; in-laws Stan, Ted, Bill, Eileen, Jack, Mel and Tom. Family was Bertha’s greatest joy and they were truly the light of her life. Her commitment to her family was unwavering, and she took immense pride in the achievements and happiness of her three devoted daughters, Brenda (Kelly) Cousins, Heather (Danny) Bouvier, and Michelle Moffat. The legacy of her love is carried on by her adoring grandchildren, Cory (Sabrina), Lisa, Teri (Kodi); great-grandchildren, Kris (Brooke), Kierstin, Ethan, Brooklyn, Mason, Maddy, Treyton, Lainey, Brekken, and Maleah; great-great grandchildren Brielle and Tommy and mother of her deceased grandson Jocelyn Cousins. Her nurturing presence, the family gatherings where her laughter was the heart of the celebration will be missed and forever cherished in their hearts.
Bertha’s siblings, Penny Taylor, Edith (Bruce) Barrett, Tressia (Larry) Addison, Linda (Bill) Mulvey, and Bill (Bonni) Houle, remember her as the glue that held their close-knit family together. Many extended family members and in-laws also felt the warmth of Bertha’s embrace and will miss her dearly, her presence was a comfort to many, and her absence will be deeply felt.
Her education in Portage la Prairie laid the foundation for a fulfilling career that included roles at Campbell Soup, McCains, and Berkley’s. She was also the cornerstone of support for her husband, Keith’s business, Moffat Construction. Together, they built their beloved home on the Peony farm where she remained until her last days, a testament to their partnership and dedication.
Bertha spent many peaceful days in the company of her beloved dog; Jersey whose presence brought her comfort and joy. In her early years, Bertha’s athletic spirit shone through in her passion for playing baseball. Bertha was an avid card player, often staying up into the wee hours of the morning, playing with her sisters. Her cooking skills were unmatched, and “the garden” was a source of pride and joy for her and Keith. She was a fan of Bingo, and she shared her love for the Blue Jays and did not like to miss a game. Bertha was devoted to her faith and said a prayer every night.
As we bid farewell to Bertha Moffat our Nanny, we celebrate a life beautifully lived and a woman dearly loved. Those who knew Bertha were touched by her loving, thoughtful, and generous nature. Her story does not end with her passing, for she has left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew her. She had a gift for making everyone feel special and valued, a trait that endeared her to many. Bertha’s life was a lesson in kindness, a symphony of joy, and a legacy of love that will continue to inspire generations to come. “I love you to the moon and back”
