With sadness we announce Brian Erickson passed away on July 13, 2026 at Health Science Centre at the age of 67 years.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Karen Erickson (nee Hume) of Portage la Prairie, children Meaghan Erickson of Calgary and Dwayne Erickson of Portage la Prairie, brother Doug (Sheryl) Erickson, sister Liz Hein, brother-in-law Albert Addison, sister-in-law Elsie Addison, mother-in-law Louise Hume, bonus daughter Robyn Halliday, special friends Danny, Heather and Randy, his constant companions Willow and Jasper; along with numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Brian was predeceased by his parents Rita and Clarence Erickson, sister Diana Addison, brother Bob Erickson, brother-in-law Dave Hein and father-in-law Dennis Hume.
Born in Weyburn Sk. on August 16, 1958 and spent his childhood and young adulthood living with his parents Rita and Clarence Erickson. Brian moved to Elgin MB, and lived with his sister Diana and her family before relocating to Brandon to pursue a career in nursing. While doing work experience at a personal care home, he met Karen (nee Hume) and a little over a year later on August 15, 1987 they were married. Brian graduated from the LPN course at ACC in Brandon in June of 1988, 2 weeks after his daughter Meaghan was born. Finding a nursing position was difficult, but Brian eventually found a full-time position at the Portage District General Hospital where he worked on the surgical/obs ward until 2016. Son, Dwayne joined the family in September of 1995.
Brian enjoyed volunteering with PAWS, the Presbyterian Church soup kitchen, Potato Festival and the Whoop and Hollar Folk Festival.
Sadly, illness curtailed many of Brian’s activities, but he was always there to help anyone in need. In January 2026, Brian’s health started to deteriorate and he started dialysis. He was looking forward to having dialysis in his home and he and Karen trained for 6 weeks but unfortunately Brian passed before he really got started.
A celebration of Brian’s life will be held on Tuesday, July 28, 2026 at Trinity United Church - lower auditorium, from 2:00pm - 4:00 pm.
As expressions of sympathy, donations can be made in Brian’s memory to Portage Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), 121 12th St. NE, Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 4A2.
A tree will be planted in memory and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel. www.mckenziesportagefuneralchapel.com
