Carol Zacharias

Faithful, Generous, Loving, Creative, Musical

With her friend and family by her side, Carol Zacharias passed away on June 8, 2026 at Douglas Campbell Lodge at the age of 80 years.

Carol was born in Altona, Manitoba on August 21, 1945 to parents, Dave and Lena Fehr and lived her early childhood in their home in Schoenau. At an early age, Carol learned about vegetable and flower gardening and how to pick weeds. Her biggest delight came when her parents bought her the first piano. Carol attended schools in Schoenau, Thames High School, and finally the Mennonite Collegiate Institute for Grade 12. Carol’s teacher talked her into going to Teacher’s College even though her first choice was in Home Design. With much hard work, she accomplished her Bachelor of Education which led to a career in Teaching.

Carol married the love of her life, Henry Donald Zacharias, on July 3, 1966 and they moved around Manitoba following his CO-OP job. Carol’s teaching career also covered many schools in Manitoba with her final school being Crescentview School in Portage la Prairie. Carol moved from their dream house in High Bluff to the Peony Farm after Don’s passing in 1986.

Carol was extremely creative and artistic. This could be seen in the designing of flower beds at her various homes or in her displays at Trinity United and at other events. She had a knack for representing themes through art work, flower arrangements, sewing, and words.

Music was Carol’s passion. Singing, playing the piano and guitar, and drumming were all ways she portrayed her musical talents. She played a vital part in the music programming at Trinity United. Carol was a part of the Senior Choir, led the Junior Choir, played the pipe organ, and instructed drumming workshops. Trinity United Church in Portage was Carol’s second family. It was here that she made lifelong friendships and volunteered in many capacities. She also belonged to other organizations including The Manitoba Reading Association, Portage Music and Arts Festival, and the ADK Women’s Educational Group. She was always doing for others. Whether it was making blankets or quilts for children in need or raising funds for the less fortunate. In short, Carol was a woman of many talents with a heart of gold towards others.

In addition to many friends, Carol is lovingly remembered by her sister Elma (Don) Dillard of South Carolina, her sister-in-law Judy (Jac) of Sherwood Park, Alberta, her brother Ray (Anne) Fehr of Altona, Kathy Treflin partner of (Ron) of Fort Frances and her closest friend Donna Moore, as well as several nieces and nephews whom she adored. Carol was predeceased by her parents Dave and Lena Fehr, husband Don Zacharias, and brothers Jac and Ron Fehr.

Family and friends wish to express their deepest gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Douglas Campbell Lodge for their exceptional care and compassion shown to Carol during her stay.

A celebration of Carol’s life will be held later this summer at Trinity United Church. Watch for further details.
