Charles "Charlie" Friesen

We regret to announce the passing of Charlie Friesen on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at the age of 76 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his children Vaughn, Simone (Steve), Nolan (Karly), Meagan (Kris) and Karen; his grandchildren Brandon, Koalden, Kaylene, Jonny, Carson, Sidney, Kade, Simone Jr, and Konnor. As the youngest of 11 children, he is survived by brother and sister Bill and Sue, and a large extended family. He will also be fondly remembered by his many friends.

Charlie was born on August 25, 1942, in Winkler, MB to Jake and Maria Friesen and lived most of his life in Portage la Prairie, MB, where he farmed and raised his family. After many years of working his own land, he went to work at McCain Foods then headed north to the DEW Line where he particularly enjoyed his time. Farm life called him back to Portage where he spent many years at LA Quality then Shilo Farms until his retirement. Up until this fall, he still helped in the potato harvest for Duma’s Farms.

He was a man of few words, unless you got him talking about his grandkids. His pride in them all was evident, and he tried to be present in their lives as much as he could. He will be missed at hockey games, family gatherings, and sitting around the table drinking coffee or whatever else was being poured.

As he would not have liked a big fuss made over him, a formal funeral service will not be held. Those who wish to come and remember Charlie are invited to join the family on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 any time between 3:00 pm and 8:00 pm at Tornado’s Restaurant and Lounge, 1107 Saskatchewan Ave W, Portage la Prairie.

Memorial donations in memory of Charlie may be made to charity of your choice.
