With his Bugg and in their home, Chris Beauchamp passed away on May 25, 2026 at the age of 54 years.
The fourth child of Bob and Anne Beauchamp, Chris was born October 6, 1971. Chris lived all of his full life in Portage la Prairie. A rare individual with talents in drawing, writing, and acting. Chris could have pursued any of these avenues, having received various offers while still attending school, but music was his truest passion.
Generations of Portagers who have been entertained by his performances understand Chris was no ordinary DJ. He could read and build the energy of a crowd with masterful precision, whether a 50th wedding anniversary, a school dance, Canada Day celebrations, a Christmas work party, or Pride. His incomparable storytelling, complete with exact impersonations, and sense of humour were reminders that life was meant to be enjoyed and shared, and everyone was fair game when he had the mic in his hand.
Chris understood his family responsibilities, consistent and generous, he loved unconditionally and deeply. “Our babies,” were a source of great joy for him, and he easily saw the strength of “each character.” There was both simplicity and wisdom in how he spent quality time – eat, talk, show affection.
As a community member, Chris greeted everyone with a handshake and a memory. His mind held details you had long forgotten. Routine activities, like grocery shopping, could be postponed, friends always came first. For twenty years, Chris was the manager and morning DJ of Rez Radio in Long Plain First Nation. Weather was no deterrent, just a reason to rise earlier than planned. Every morning, he would start his live show just before 7 am, bringing music and information to our Elders and early-risers. A look at his call logs showed the immense knowledge of music he held in his mind, as he made it a point to eliminate repetition and expectation in his broadcasts.
Chris will lovingly be remembered by all who had the great pleasure of crossing his path. Although we say goodbye with great sadness, Chris has continued on his journey and is now reunited with those who have gone before him.
Visitation and viewing will take place at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel on Sunday, May 31, 2026 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A celebration of Chris’ life will be held at MNP Building, Island Park Portage la Prairie, MB on Monday June 1, 2026 at 1:00 pm. Burial to follow at Hillside Memorial Park.
To honour Chris’ memory, please remember to take care of your family, your friends, your neighbours.
