With sadness we announce that Cyril Assiniboine began his journey to the Spirit World on April 24, 2025 in Winnipeg, MB at the age of 66 years.
Left to mourn are his wife Sharon Assiniboine, children Amanda Assiniboine (Adam Daniels), Lindsey Assiniboine and Raine Papassay, stepchildren Peter Beam, Adam Gordon, Cody Gustafson and Melissa Dunlop, grandchildren Sierra, Joshua, Lynniah, Kingsley, Arielle and Levana and sister Joanne, as well as numerous step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents John and Grace Assiniboine, siblings Marlene, Lorne, Alan and Darlene and niece Tammy.
Cyril grew up on Long Plain First Nation, He attended Brandon Residential School. He was a very hard worker. He worked for the City of Winnipeg for 25 years.
Cyril was a world-renowned self-taught artist. For some time he sold his work through Wah-sa Art Gallery. His original works were sought by many collectors. Cyril had two sets of coins that were minted by the Royal Canadian Mint. One set were depictions of the Ojibwa Legend of Nanaboozhoo. The other set were depictions of First Nations legends of the big dipper.
Cyril was a traditional man. He attended ceremonies and was a member of the Warrior Society. He was a men’s traditional pow wow dancer. He had a unique style, and people loved to watch him dance. He danced through Canada and the United States, and also on a sponsored exchange in Sweden. He sang with Assiniboine Jr.’s and Neil Hall.
Cyril, also know as ‘Boss’ was a Canadian Master Pool Player. He loved traveling for tournaments. Cyril has also been an extra in a few films and tv shows.
There was nothing more important to Cyril than family. Spending time at beaches, Bar-B-Q’s, birthday parties and holidays with his family, children and grandchildren.
Cyril was a very good, honest, respectful and respected man. He will be missed by all that knew and loved him.
Wake will begin at 4:00pm on Wednesday, May 7, 2025 at the Long Plain Spirit Lodge, Feast & Ceremony will be held on Thursday, May 8, 2025 at 12:00 noon at the Long Plain Spirit Lodge. Burial will follow at Dauphin Myerion Cemetery.
