David Duncan Chaske

Peacefully, David Chaske passed away on March 26, 2026 at his home at the age of 67 years.

David will be lovingly remembered by his wife Valerie Carson; children Jeremy Chaske, Daniel Chaske, and Gena (Richie) Chaske; grandchildren Ariah, Lane and Scarlette; sister Ivy Chaske; Valerie’s children, grandchildren and brothers and sisters; along with numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his mother Georgina Chaske; brothers Richard Chaske and Delore Chaske; sister Roberta Carol Abraham and Valerie’s mother Alma Carson.

David was born in Portage la Prairie, April 12, 1958. He lived with his family at Sioux Village until at age 5 when he was sent to Brandon Residential School, followed by a series of foster homes. As a young adult he returned to Portage and began working at Kroeker Farms with his brother Richard. He learned many useful skills there and still spoke fondly of his time spent there. He then returned to school and became a social worker, spending many years with Child and Family Services of Central Manitoba. Later he returned to his home reserve of Dakota Tipi to work with Child and Family Services, desiring to help his home community in this way, and then finishing his career working with Jordan’s Principle. His time spent working at Dakota Tipi was an important time for him to reconnect with his culture and native language.

David loved his work and was known for his compassion, kindness and strong work ethic. He equally enjoyed mechanics, a self-taught mechanic with an ability to seemingly fix anything. His other great pleasure was coaching and playing baseball, and golfing. He spent many hours golfing with his friends, mostly at Southport, enjoying every minute and always thinking and planning how to improve his game.

He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Family and friends can gather at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, March 31, 2026 at 2:00 pm, followed by the burial at Hillside Cemetery. A come and go reception will take place at Valerie’s home following the services.
