With his family at his side, David “Dave” Omichinski passed away peacefully on July 26, 2026 at Portage District General Hospital at the age of 72 years. He leaves behind his loving wife, Barb, as well as his children Pam (Mark), Chris, and Lisa (Mathieu); his two grandchildren, Alex and Braeden; his siblings Marna, Sandy (Gil), Lori (Ray), and Mike (Kathy) as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Aime and Isabelle.
Dave was born and raised in Portage la Prairie. He attended North Memorial School for elementary and then Portage Collegiate Institute for high school where he was active in sports. He started at the Credit Union upon graduation in 1972, moving to Winnipeg where he met his wife, Barb. He eventually worked his way back home to Portage in 1992 when he became CEO of the Portage Credit Union. He was very active in his community, including serving as president of the Portage and District Chamber of Commerce and working with the Portage and Area Beautification Committee, Portage Golf Club, Portage Public Art Steering Committee, and Downtown Business Association. He was named Portage la Prairie’s Citizen of the Year in 2013 and received the Order of Merit in 2015 from Manitoba Credit Union. He was married to his wife Barb for 48 years and was an avid gardener who enjoyed transforming his garden every few years and building bird houses and bird feeders. He also loved travelling with his wife, especially to Hawaii and Canada’s east coast.
A celebration of Dave's life will be held on Thursday, August 6, 2026 at 1:00 pm at the William Glesby Centre in Portage la Prairie. The service will be livestreamed, to register and view see link below.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dave’s memory to Cancer Care Manitoba or Portage District General Hospital Foundation.
A tree will be planted in memory and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel. www.mckenziesportagefuneralchapel.com
