Donald McCulloch

October 16, 1928 — June 4, 2025

Peacefully on June 4, 2025, Donald “Don” McCulloch of Oakville, MB passed away at the Portage District General Hospital at the age of 96 years.

Don was predeceased by his beloved wife Shirley McCulloch (nee Blight), parents William Cox McCulloch and Nan Usher McCulloch, sister Joyce Loader, brother-in-law Al Loader and infant great grandson Kai. Left to mourn his passing are his son Scott (Jo-Ann) and his children Shane (Ruth), great-granddaughter Jacey, Kristen (Nick); daughter Jo-Anne (Bob) Galbraith and their children Cheryl (Mike) great-grandchildren Harper, Cohen and Remi, Greg (Samantha), Jeff (Julia); son Grant (Lisa) and their children Breana (Javi) and Derek along with many extended family members.

Don was born October 16, 1928 on the farm near Oakville and continued to live there until his passing. He received his education at Oakville School. On June 7, 1952 he married the love of his life, Shirley and together they raised their family on the same farm where he was born and continued to live.

In the early years Don had many jobs on local farms, but he managed to farm his own ¼ section while working out at the same time. His experience also included working for a short time in the Cheese Factory, north of Newton. He started working for Manitoba Telephone System and then moved to Manitoba Hydro where he continued to work until retirement in December of 1990.

Don was a hard worker and believed in the saying “work hard, play hard” for most of his 96 years. He thoroughly enjoyed keeping his yard nice and was extremely proud of the Provincial Good Roads Home and Grounds Award they won on two separate occasions. In his earlier years he enjoyed fishing and hunting with friends and family but also was an avid bowler, curler, golfer and reader.

As a young man during war years, Don was a Cadet. He was also a lifetime member of the Oakville Curling Club, a member of the Portage Curling Club, Portage Golf Club, Portage Legion #65, Portage Army & Navy Veterans Club and the Elk’s Club.

Memorial Service will be held at Knox United Church in Oakville on Tuesday, June 10, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. Private interment will take place at the Oakville Cemetery.

As expressions of sympathy, if people so wish, donations may be made in Don’s memory to Central Plains Cancer Services, 318 Saskatchewan Avenue East Portage la Prairie R1N OK8, or Oakville Cemetery, Box 88, Oakville MB R0H 0Y0.
