Listen to Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Donna Kirkbride on July 4, 2026 at Saint Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, MB at the age of 77 years.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Jack Kirkbride of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, daughter Michelle Kirkbride (Ben) of Winnipeg, Manitoba, son David Kirkbride (Kristin) of Winnipeg, Manitoba and beloved grandson Will Kirkbride of Winnipeg, Manitoba, brother Rick Green (Cheryl) of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan as well as many cherished nieces, nephews and cousin Colleen Green with whom she shared a very special bond.

Donna was predeceased by parents William (Bill) and Shirley Green, sisters Pat Milburn and Linda Green and brother Gordon Green.

Donna was born in Portage la Prairie on March 20, 1949. She grew up on the family farm just outside of Portage instilling a life-long love of nature, trees, and animals, in particular horses and dogs.

Perhaps because she was named after a nurse, Donna chose a career in nursing and she practiced for 50 years. She graduated with her LPN in 1969 and her RN in 1979, beginning her career at Health Sciences Centre, Deer Lodge, Manitoba Clinic, Portage General Hospital, Churchill, MB and Kemano, BC. The bulk of her career, however, was spent in the United States, including Florida; San Antonio, Texas; and Seattle, Washington where she spent the last 20+ years specializing in cardiac nursing. She was loved by patients, admired by colleagues and respected by doctors as one of the best nurses they ever had the opportunity to work with. She loved nursing and only reluctantly gave it up to retire.

Donna had an insatiable appetite for history, in particular World War II history, a love of reading, and an endless spirit of adventure. She especially loved to travel, visiting Europe over 15 times and more than 20 countries. She also travelled to Mexico, all over the United States and from coast to coast in Canada. She had an almost spiritual love of Scotland and Ireland and was particularly proud of visiting the Isle of Skye in Scotland, and relished being able to experience English Royal history and seeing the battlefields of France. She was incredibly grateful for the opportunity to travel with both family and friends, filling those trips with laughter, unique experiences, incredible memories and captured each moment with hundreds of photographs, a passion of hers.

Donna was incredibly social and relished spending time with family and friends, nurturing relationships across the globe. She was a keen board game enthusiast, music afficionado and had a particular affection for the Rolling Stones, whom she had seen in concert several times.

The holidays always brought her joy, particularly Christmas when she went all out decorating both indoors and out. Her tablescapes were stunningly beautiful and a matter of family legend.

She loved both the simple things in life such as a sunset over a wheatfield, planting her flower garden and landscaping with solar lights, as much as the finer things like lobster dinners or high tea with fine china and patisserie.

In recent years, her grandson Will was the light of her life, spending as much time with him as possible, sharing her love of music, reading and quality time together just as she had done with her children when they were young.

Donna will be greatly missed, and we encourage you to share your stories and memories of her.

A celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel at 1:00 pm with burial to follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.

For those who would so wish, you can make donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or plant a tree in her honour.
