Suddenly on May 20, 2026, we announce the passing of Douglas Gladue from Dakota Tipi at the age of 40 years old.

Left to cherish all his memories are his Kunsi Marina James nee Smoke of Dakota Tipi, father Jack Gladue and step mom Bonnie West of Portage la Prairie, step dad Karl Stagg of Edwin, uncle Colin James (Cyndi) of Dakota Tipi, brothers Clayton James-Stagg, Ethan James-Stagg, Quinn James-Stagg, Adrian James-Stagg, Tyson James (Marcie), Dillian West, William Stagg, sisters Denise Pashe, Elisha Faschoway (Dylan), Kimberly Merrick (Sheldon), nieces Marina and Avery Gladue, nephew Trent, special nephew Jarek Merrick, sister-in-law Melanie Bayley; along with his huge extended family, with numerous sister, brothers, uncles, aunties, nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, friends, with many, adopted family.

Doug was predeceased by his mother Sheila James, brother Trent Gladue, grandparents Don and Jean Gladue, grandpa Douglas James, grandpa Tom Paton, aunties Debbie Gladue, Donna West, Valerie Daniels and uncle Albert Lilley.

Douglas was born on March 11, 1986 in Portage la Prairie, to Sheila James and Jack Gladue. He grew up Edwin Area and Portage la Prairie. Doug went to school at Yellowquill and later graduated from PCI. He went on to study at the University of Manitoba, where he attained his Bachelor of Science degree and also attained an Aboriginal Political Degree. He held a position as a national youth leader for the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs and in 2014 he became Councillor for Dakota Tipi.

His love for hiking, began when he was a young boy with his uncle Colin and brother Trent, then with his siblings and cousins, going to the Sand Hills, hiking the water falls at seven sisters. He also took the youth canoeing and camping near the Ontario border, he loved to go fishing with his brothers and dad, also travelled around North America, meeting people all over. He loved spending time with his nephew Jarek and flying his drone. His passion was singing with his drum group Dakota Hostiles, competing at pow wows, when they were host drum at WayWay pow wow over hitting the drum an extra beat, looking at everybody realizing his mistake and yelled “hoka” and forever be remembered by the drum group by that.

Douglas will always be remembered by his jokingly manner, always making people laugh. He was loved and will be missed greatly. Its never “goodbye” but Dosta Ake.

Traditional Wake will take place at Dakota Tipi Gaming Centre on Monday June 1, 2026 at 4:00pm. Feast and Ceremony will be held at Dakota Tipi Gaming Centre on June 2, 2026 beginning at 12:00pm, followed by burial at Sioux Village Cemetery
