Peacefully, with his family by his side, Edward Nikkel passed away on June 11, 2025 at the Portage District General Hospital at the age of 79 years.
Ed was born January 23,1946 in Altona Manitoba to Henry and Elizabeth Nikkel. He was the ninth of thirteen children. He enjoyed playing hockey and other sports and attended the Winkler Bible School after completion of high school. He met Mary Neudorf in 1965 and they were married on July 21, 1967. They were blessed with three sons, Rodney Lee in 1968, Paul Steven in 1971, and Brent Edward in 1980. Ed & Mary eventually settled in the Portage la Prairie area and started the window & glass business, Ed’s Glass, in 1980. Ed was liked and respected by his many customers. He served the community until his retirement in 2015, passing the business on to his son Brent.
Ed’s greatest joy was spending time with family. He treasured each family gathering, camping trip and visit. Ed was an active member of the Portage Evangelical Church, where he volunteered as the “sound man” for many years and helped in every way that he could. His quiet faith and gentle spirit impacted everyone who knew him. During the last ten years, Ed suffered multiple strokes which limited his mobility. Despite these challenges, Ed remained as active as possible, and time spent with family became even more precious to him.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Mary Nikkel (nee Neudorf); son Rodney (Wendy), son Paul (Kimberly), son Brent (Delina); grandchildren Jesse (Kayla), Dustin and Tyler; Colton, Melanie (Bill), Jewel, Seanna, and Colby; Thalia, Lisa, Sarah, Nancy, Ezra and Brielle; great grandchildren Rosa, Mary, Scarlet and Will , along with 2 brothers and 8 sisters, numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Henry and Elizabeth Nikkel, 2 sisters, 4 brothers-in-law and 1 sister-in-law.
