Freida Edna John (nee Merrick)

“White Buffalo Woman”

Freida “Fred” was born on May 27, 1961. She was the ninth of twelve children born to Alvin and Edna Viola (nee Houle) Merrick. She left on her spirit journey on September 26, 2023 with her beloved husband Alvin by her side.

Freida met Alvin in Alberta while on a family trip to a ceremony. They married in May 1983 and raised Cheyenne and Thelma in Kehewin Cree Nation, AB. Freida worked as a seamstress at Kehewin Sewing Factory for a lot of years.

She  loved and cherished her family, and will be greatly missed by her  husband Alvin, daughter Thelma, grandsons Kyan & Andrew, grandson Chris and great-granddaughter Lenna, grandson Skyler (Rowena) and great granddaughter baby Rose, grandsons Aiden and Ashton, sisters Liz, Rosalind and Hazel, and brother Warren (Arlene), as well as many extended family members and friends.

Freida was predeceased by her daughter Cheyenne, parents Alvin and Edna (nee Houle) Merrick, sisters Sandra and Andrea and brothers Doug, Gerald, Reginald, Terry and Roger.

A celebration of Freida's life will be held at the John family home on Saturday, September 30, 2023 beginning at 7:30pm.
