George James Core

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of George Core on October 1, 2025, at the age of 83. George passed at Portage District General Hospital, surrounded by the love of his family.

George was a cherished son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 65 years, Gail; daughters Donna and Cathy (Leroy); granddaughters Kayla (Alex), Bryna, Janelle (Jay), and Shelby (Jimmy); great-granddaughters Maddison, Aspen, and Lexie; and, after many years of anticipation, his great-grandson Jasper.

He was predeceased by his parents, James and Hannah; sister Ester; in-laws Roy and Helen; and brothers-in-law Bob, Wayne, and Larry.

George began his career with CN Railway before dedicating many years as a skilled Heavy Equipment Operator—a role he took immense pride in. Even after retiring, his passion led him to teach Heavy Equipment operation at Red River College in Winnipeg, alongside his longtime friend Stanley.

A man of dedication and precision, George was known for his immaculate vehicles and perfectly maintained yard. He helped build two homes and eventually constructed the one he lived in. He was deeply involved in his daughters’ activities, serving on committees for figure skating and coaching baseball, always eager to share his knowledge and offer guidance.

Above all, George was a devoted husband, a proud father, and a loving grandfather and great-grandfather. His presence, wisdom, and warmth will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Viewing and visitation will be held on Monday, October 6, 2025 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 7, 2025 at 1:00 pm at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel. A private family burial will take place at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.

A tree will be planted and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel.
