With sadness we announce the passing of Gerald “Gerry” Large on November 27, 2025 at the Portage District General Hospital at the age of 94 years.
Gerald is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Georgina (nee Farnecombe), sons Cam (Kim), Tim (Jacquie) and Perry (Roxy), grandchildren Kathryn (Shawn) and Jack (Anna); along with relatives and friends.
Gerald was born in High Bluff on May 9, 1931. After the passing of his father, Homer Large, in March 1932, Gerald was lovingly raised by his grandparents, Isabella and Albert Large.
In 1954, Gerald and Georgina were married and made their home in Portage la Prairie, where Gerald entered a partnership with Jim Collett - “Collett and Large”, Shell Canada. He remained with Shell Canada for 35 years until his retirement on December 31, 1989. Following retirement, Gerald enjoyed working at the Portage Golf Course for six summers. After retirement you could also find him refinishing furniture in his backyard shop.
Gerald’s favorite times were spent at the family cottage at Delta Beach with family and friends, where he found joy in nature and gatherings. He was an avid birder and had a passion for photography. Known for his love of animals he grew up owning many dogs and would often care for abandoned animals.
He enjoyed curling and later became an enthusiastic hunter. In 1966, he joined the Portage Country Club, where he shared many memorable hunting adventures with family and friends.
Gerald cherished his family and loved spending time with his grandchildren, Kathryn and Jack.
He was very involved in the community and volunteered for many years with the Royal Canadian Air Cadets and the Fort la Reine Wildlife Association, reflecting his dedication to service and conservation. Gerald loved watching sports, and anyone who knew him would know that he was a devoted Boston Bruins fan!
Gerald will be remembered for his kindness, his love of the outdoors, and his devotion to family and community. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A private celebration of Gerald’s life will take place in the spring. He will be interred at Evergreen Memorial Gardens Columbarium at a later date.
