Gerald Murkin

With great sadness we announce that Gerald Murkin passed away with his family by his side at the Portage District General Hospital on Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at the age of 77 years.

Gerald will be lovingly remembered by his wife Sharon (nee Kulbacki) of Portage la Prairie, MB; children Kerry Murkin of Alexander, MB, Chantal Murkin (Travis Ross) and grandchildren Jacy, Noah and Sophia Ross of Portage la Prairie, MB, and Cheryl Murkin of Portage la Prairie, MB; brother Vern (Linda) Murkin of Winnipegosis, MB and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.  Gerald was predeceased by his parents Ben and Laura (nee Kinsley) Murkin.

Gerald was born in Neepawa, MB and grew up in Arden, MB. He received a diploma of Agriculture from U of M, and his work in agriculture took him to jobs in Katrime, Swan River, Gladstone, where he also spent time on the volunteer fire department, Hamiota, and finally Portage la Prairie, MB where he retired from Manitoba Crop Insurance in 2000.

Gerald had a love of cars and driving, and enjoyed stock car racing. He also enjoyed curling, baseball and golf through the years. Gerald also loved to do crossword puzzles and read – especially about planes and wartime history.  Gerald’s sense of humor and love of jokes started him laughing – and it was a laugh that anyone could recognize! He was a loving man, and was always very supportive of his family. He faced his illness with grace.

A Celebration of Gerald’s life will be held at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at 2:00 p.m., led by Rev. Julie Baker.  Interment will take place at a later date.

As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Gerald’s memory to The Lung Association, 301 – 1 Wesley Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3C 4C6.
