Helen passed away peacefully on April 7, 2026. Born in Kingston, Ontario, and a longtime resident of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, Helen built a life centered on family, hard work, and legendary meals. Christmas dinners were her favorite—surrounded by loved ones and enough food to ensure no one ever left hungry.
Helen worked in a variety of roles throughout her life, from Amway to the mushroom plant, Panko’s, and Portage Supermarket. She ultimately found great joy and purpose at Visions of Independence, where she worked until her retirement.
She is now reunited with her beloved husband, William Earl Goodberry. Helen took up golf to share in Bill’s passion and was always proud of how patiently he taught her the game. They shared their final years together in care until his passing two years ago.
Helen is survived by her children: John (Cheryl), Sean (Pam), Kimberly, and stepson Robert Goodberry (Melanie); her brother Russell (Sally); and brothers-in-law Timothy, Tommy, and Steven Goodberry. Helen was Steven’s biggest fan, constantly bragging about his musical talent and cherishing his visits to the care home to perform.
She was deeply grateful to her granddaughter Alyssa, who stayed in Ontario, and her niece Michelle, who provided support during her final years. Helen will also be missed by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her special friends in Portage—Della, Patricia, and Ruth—who meant so much to her.
Whether it was bingo, slot machines, or computer games, Helen brought spirit to everything she did. Above all, she truly lived for the visits and phone calls from her family and friends.
Special thanks to the staff and doctors at Kingston General Hospital, as well as the caring staff and friends at Extendicare Limestone Ridge, for their compassion and support.
Helen will be laid to rest with William at a later date.
Don’t weep at my grave, for I am not there,
I’ve a date with a butterfly to dance in the air.
I’ll be singing in the sunshine, wild and free,
playing tag with the wind while I’m waiting for thee.
