It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Irene Martynowicz, a gentle and kind soul whose warmth and unique spirit touched the lives of everyone around her.
Born on December 20, 1957, in Virden, Manitoba, Irene was the beloved daughter of Olga and Nicholas, and sister to Alexander. She lived in Virden until the age of four, when she moved to Portage la Prairie and became a long-time resident of the Manitoba Developmental Centre (MDC), where she lived for 62 years.
Irene found joy in the simple pleasures of life—music, storytelling, movies, walks, gardening, and relaxing on the gazebo swing. She especially loved camping and being outdoors, where she could feel the sun on her face and the breeze on her skin.
On December 6, 2023, Irene moved into a Visions of Independence home, where she lived with her roommates Annie and Wade. She quickly became a cherished member of her new home, forming close bonds with her dedicated staff and enjoying the companionship of those around her.
Irene had a special love for country music, often rocking gently in her chair with her favorite shoe in hand and shoelaces looped through her fingers. She delighted in sipping warm black coffee—never with cream—and had a charming way of communicating her preferences with subtle gestures and expressions. Her laughter was contagious, and she often giggled when she saw something funny, bringing joy to those around her.
She enjoyed outings to Island Park, where she and her roommates would picnic and sit by the lake, soaking in the peaceful surroundings. Irene loved being outside, and staff knew to let her stay a little longer when she began to drift off in the sun, only to wake and rock again, signaling she wasn’t ready to go back inside.
Irene also loved having her hair styled with colorful bows, always choosing the most vibrant, rainbow-like ones. She was fascinated by glasses and enjoyed wearing a special pair gifted to her by staff. Her gentle nature and expressive ways made her deeply endearing—she often reached out to hold hands, a quiet gesture of connection and gratitude.
In her later years, Irene found comfort in watching classic TV shows like The Beverly Hillbillies and The Andy Griffith Show, her eyes lighting up with joy as she watched. Her music took a backseat to these beloved programs, and staff knew just how to make her smile.
Irene became ill with RSV and, despite the care and support she received, her health declined. She was hospitalized several times and eventually developed pneumonia, which she was too weak to recover from.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, November 7, 2025, at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel at 1:00 pm. Viewing to be held prior to the service. The service will also be livestreamed and may be viewed by registering at the link below. Burial will follow at Hillside cemetery.
