With sadness we announce the passing of Jacob Unrau on October 5, 2025 at Wainwright Continuing Care Hospital in at the age of 91 years.
Jacob was predeceased by his wife Christine Unrau, parents Wilhelm and Mary Unrau, siblings Anne, Katrina, William, Mary and Peter. He will be lovingly remembered by his children: son Garth (Sandra) Unrau of Cranbrook, BC with grandchildren Nicole Unrau (Bryan Edington), Christopher (Jacqueline) Unrau – great grandson Brian Unrau, Thomas Unrau, Alex Unrau and Sarah Unrau (Zach Everson); son Wesley (Laura) Unrau of Kimberly, BC with grandchildren Tana Eddy – great granddaughter Isabelle O’Sullivan, Tyler (Jamie) Unrau – great grandsons Brody Unrau and Deacon Unrau; daughter Janice Unrau of Edmonton, AB; brothers Richard (Beverly) Unrau and Edward (Shirley) Unrau both of Portage la Prairie, MB; nephew James (Dawn) Unrau of Portage la Prairie, MB, brother-in-law John (Jean) Brockie of Edmonton, AB; along with numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Jake was born in Fortier, MB and raised in the Portage la Prairie area. He married Christine Brockie (Unrau) in 1957 Jake worked as a bartender and laid tiles prior to obtaining his Heavy-Duty Mechanic Certificate. After which, they moved to Weyburn, SK where he worked for Co-op Implements. While in Weyburn, Jake was involved in Cadets, curling, coaching hockey and softball and the Elks Club. They moved to Edmonton, AB in 1989 where he worked for Edmonton Recycle Society until he retired. In Edmonton, Jake was a member of the Edmonton Eskimos Football Club and enjoyed attending football and hockey games. Jake liked Gardening, golfing and spending time with his grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in Jake’s honor at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel November 1, 2025 at 11:00 am. Interment will take place at Hillside Cemetery.
Donations can be made in Jake’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society.
