Listen to Obituary

Peacefully on May 19, 2026, Keith Maxwell passed away at the Lorne Memorial Hospital at the age of 87 years.

He was lovingly remembered by his wife Ruth Bowden Maxwell, daughter Sheila Maxwell (James Hulme), sisters Joan parker and Shirley Armstrong, in-laws Agnes Graham, Don (Linda) Bowden, Lawrence (Dianne) Dowden, Marilyn (Doug) Dembiczak, Yvonne (Dave) Patten, Narisa Bowden, Diane (Don) Robertson and Karen (Robert) Stuart; along with numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Keith was predeceased by his parents John and Betty Maxwell, brothers-in-law Charlie Armstrong and Bill Parker, in-law Allan Bowden.

Keith was born on February 21, 1939, only son of John and Betty Maxwell, and was raised in the Salem District and attended the Salem School. He farmed with his parents and was employed at BC Pea Elevators for a year. Then worked as a mechanic for eleven years for Leon Palendat Farm Equipment. In 1977 he was employed with Agriculture Canada at the Portage Research Station later named Manitoba Crop Diversification Center.

Keith accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Saviour in May 1983 and loved to listen to live gospel groups, tapes and CD’s, as well as country western music. Being raised on a farm, Keith was interested in restoring farm equipment and tractor engines. He has a keen interest in the Austin Threshermen’s Reunion and the Fort La Reine Museum in Portage. Keith donated much of his time to restoring the agricultural history of our district. His pride and joy was the restoration of a 1948 International Farmall M Tractor and a 1952 Massey 33 diesel tractor.

For many years he helped his Dad and served as a trustee on the Maple Grove Cemetery Committee for 17 years. He also mowed the grass there for many years, both Ruth and Sheila helped him. His favourite pastime was socializing with his friends at the Portage Mall over coffee.

A viewing will take place at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel on Friday, May 29, 2026 at 1:00 pm. We will then proceed to the Maple Grove Cemetery for a graveside service at 2:00 pm.
