“Little Bone Woman”

Mary “Doreen” Myran began her journey to the Spirit World suddenly on April 8th, 2024 at the Portage District General Hospital in Portage la Prairie, MB at the age of 93 years.

Doreen was born February 12th, 1931, to Chief Alex Peepeetch & Delia Henry on Little Bone First Nation in Saskatchewan. Doreen attended residential school at both Marieval and Lebret in Saskatchewan. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, beading, making braided rugs, and caring for her numerous houseplants.

Mom was a strong, feisty, independent force to be reckoned with and everyone who knew her, knew that she would speak her mind if she felt it was warranted.

Mom met and married her only husband Robert “Bob” Myran and together they raised 11 children in Long Plain First Nation throughout the 1950’s, 1960’s and well into the 1970’s.

She was a homemaker; an educational assistant; as well as a receptionist and support worker for Dakota Ojibway Child and Family Services.

A fluent language speaker of Mitchif, Cree, and English, she also understood Anishinaabemowin, but was shy to speak it.

A Knowledge Keeper with a talent for creating, Doreen made star blankets, quilted blankets, jingle dresses, and various beadwork items. She was also an avid bingo player and loved gardening.

Mom often regaled her children with the true stories of the struggles she endured throughout her residential school years. There were many stories of the horrendous

abuse she suffered along with inspiring stories of her incredible triumphs in the face of adversary. Mom was a true warrior woman who made everyone of her grandchildren great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren feel loved and special to her.

Doreen is survived by her children, Robert “Bobby” Myran, Brenda Myran, Doreen Elizabeth Myran, Richard Myran (Karen Bell), Kenneth Myran, Sidney Myran, Sheila Myran and Daniel Myran (Rhonda Daniels), as well as numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Doreen was predeceased by her parents Delia and Alex Peepeetch, her husband Robert “Bob” Myran, her daughters Gloria Wescoup and Lorraine Myran, her son Douglas Myran, and her stepson Joe Myran.

Wake will take place on Thursday, April 11th, 2024 at the Long Plain Spirit Lodge beginning at 4:00 pm. Feast and Ceremony will be held on Friday, April 12th, 2024 at noon at the Long Plain Spirit Lodge, followed by cremation and a small private family service.

The family would like to thank Long Plain First Nation Chief and Council, Portage District General Hospital, Nurse and friend Angela Daniels of the Long Plain Health Centre, McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel, and all those who have offered support and assistance during this difficult time.
