Listen to Obituary

We regret to announce the unexpected passing of Michael King on February 7, 2026, at his home in Portage la Prairie, MB, at the age of 62 years.

He has returned to the loving arms of Feef and will be lovingly remembered by his children Alexandra (Jesse) King, of Winnipeg MB, and Mitchel (Laura) King of Portage la Prairie, MB, mother Helen (nee Dunn) King, and brother Greg (Dorothy) King, of Hay River, NT, life long friends Mitchell & Lana Penner, as well as other friends and relatives.

Mike was born in Deloraine on June 29, 1963. He lived there until moving to Reston, and then finally settling in Portage in 1977. There he met the love of his life, Elizabeth “Feef”, whom he married on September 14, 1985. The first addition to their family came on November 11, 1993, when Alexandra was born. They completed their family on August 29, 1998, when Mitchell was born. Being a father changed Mike’s life forever, giving him purpose and immense pride and joy. He often said his most important accomplishment was raising his children. He did this together with Feef, until her passing in 2016. After that staggering loss, he remained focused on his children. Mike taught his children that even the most profound losses are survivable. We three Kings was the motto that the family lived by.

While dealing with the grief of losing Feef, Mike became the family anchor. He was the safe haven for Alex and Mitchell, as they all learned to navigate their new reality. He carried his kids after the loss of Feef, and now they will continue to carry the King legacy on. Mike had just hosted a New Years Eve party where his daughter Alex, and her long-term boyfriend Jesse, got engaged. He was overjoyed and anytime he messaged Jesse from that point on, he would start the message with “How is my favorite, and only, son in law”. Mike was Alex’s rock as she worked on completing her nursing degree. He was always a selfless person. This was obvious to everyone who knew him and one time he even drove to Alex’s place in Winnipeg to change her tire before she got home from work. He also had a very close bond with his son, Mitchell. They would spend hours tinkering out in the garage. During these times they would talk about mechanics, listen to music, and discuss life. In addition to spending time with his family and friends, he also adopted his favorite furry companion, Ben, his beloved golden retriever. They did everything together. Mike was an outdoorsman and loved to hunt, fish, boat, and take drives in his side by side with Ben.

He loved getting together with his many friends, listening to music and enjoying life. Mike was always down for weekends at the cabin with Andy and Shelley, playing and watching hockey, baseball and golf, and pool days with Lana and Mitch. Mike was also a homebody though. He loved to be at home with a fire in the garage, Ben by his side, and shooting the shit with Alex and Jesse, Mitch and Laura, or any family or friends.

In the words of Michael King, “put on some music, turn it up loud, hug those you love, always say I love you, drink a Jesse coffee, and treat yourself”.

As per Mike’s wishes, a private graveside service will be held at Hillside Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy can be donated in Mike’s name to The Heart and Stroke Foundation or to Portage Animal Welfare Society, PAWS.

A tree will be planted in memory and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel. www.mckenziesportagefuneralchapel.com
