After a short battle with cancer, Monica Lapointe passed away on Thursday, July 14. 2022 at the Portage District General Hospital at the age of 69 years.
Monica will be lovingly remembered by the father of her children Ken Ward of Thompson, MB; children Jeanna (Anthony) Emms of Portage la Prairie and James Ward of Winnipeg; grandsons David, Joshua and Angus; granddaughter Alita; great-grandchildren Jennifer, Johnathan. and Robbie; siblings Sherman (Giselle) Lapointe of Lorette, MB, Bunny (Jack) Rousseau of Edmonton, AB and Nancy Mudge of Winnipeg, MB; friends Carol Viccars, Shirley Bernard and Susan Ward; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. She was predeceased by her parents Wilfred and Dorothy Lapointe; siblings Don Lapointe and Shirley Bergeron.
Mom was born in Haywood, MB and grew up there and in and around Portage la Prairie. She grew up as a farm girl and nothing pleased her more than fresh air, gardening and animals. She was always motivated to do more and in her fifties went back to high school to finish her grade 12, after she graduated she attended Red River College to obtain her applied Counselling Certification. Monica worked many jobs in her career, most of which were with helping people, receptionist, doctor offices, support worker for troubled youth, independent living programming and her last placement working as a family enhancement worker for CFS.
Mom was so crafty, she could knit, sew and crochet just about anything without a pattern. She seemed to have an endless catalogue of patterns in her head and she taught me to make sleeves and to turn a heel when knitting socks. She would come camping with us as recently as last year, these trips were so much fun. She was stubborn sometimes and when she made up her mind about something I would throw up my hands and give in. She was also funny, lively person and a great baker. She was the best grandmother and was so proud to be a great-grandmother and we will miss her so much.
Viewing and visitation will take place at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A service to celebrate Monica’s life will be held at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel on Thursday, July 21, 2022 at 1:00 pm. Interment will take place at the Haywood Cemetery.
