Netta Emilie Wall

After a short illness, Emilie Wall died peacefully with family by her side at Portage District General Hospital on September 11, 2026.

She was predeceased by her parents Ernie and Minn Fraser, brother Wilson Fraser, sister Marie and brother-in-law Gordon Sim, and parents-in-law Bill and Ellen Wall.

She is survived by her husband Kevin, son Larry (Claudia and grandchildren Norah and Alex), son Trevor (Tracey and grandson Erei) and son Travis, sister-in-law Edith Fraser, and sister-in-law Jo Wall (Elaine); along with cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Born July 14, 1945 in Russell, Manitoba, Emilie grew up on the family farm at Silverton. She attended Stratford School and Major Pratt Collegiate. She held a weekend job at Reavie’s Pharmacy in Russell and thought she would like to be a pharmacist. A year in the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Manitoba dispelled that idea, so she enrolled in Teachers College, which was an excellent fit for her. She taught elementary school in East Kildonan for two years. Emilie and Kevin were married in 1967 and lived in Crystal City. For the next two years she taught grades three and four at Clearwater, before taking time off to raise their family. In 1977, the family moved to Portage la Prairie, and Emilie taught grade two at Crescentview School. Her passion was helping children learn to read. She retired from teaching in 2000. Does anyone remember the grade two pool party?

After retirement, Emilie helped coordinate a pre-school reading program at Portage Regional Library, was a substitute teacher, volunteered at Portage Learning and Literacy Centre – always the teacher. A highlight was a trip to Ghana, Africa where she volunteered as a library assistant. Amongst these activities, Emilie and Kevin took time to travel extensively.

Emilie eagerly awaited visits from family members and was always ready to spend time with friends.

Cremation has occurred. There will be no service. It was Emilie’s wish that, if friends so desire, they should, instead, meet informally, in small groups of their own choosing, over coffee or drinks (she loved a glass of white wine on Games Day), for a visit. Her cremains will be placed in the Scattering Garden at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
