Listen to Obituary

With sadness, we announce the passing of Paul George Wood, lovingly known as “Woody,” on March 29, 2026, at Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, MB.

Paul was born on October 3, 1938, in Lindsay, Ontario. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Venetta (Hay), whom he met during his time in Rivers, Manitoba. They were married March 28,1964 in Carberry, MB.

Paul began his career with the Royal Canadian Air Force on the 10th of November in St. Catherines, Ontario at the age of 17. His work took him across Canada, including training in St. Jean, Quebec (1955–1956), and postings in Claresholm, Alberta (1956), Grand Bend, Ontario (1956–1957), North Bay, Ontario (1957–1960), and Rivers, Manitoba (1960). He continued his career in Trenton, Ontario (1960–1963), Churchill, Manitoba (1963–1964), Camp Borden, Ontario (1964–1968), Cold Lake, Alberta (1968–1974), Esquimalt, British Columbia (1974–1977), Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan (1977–1981), Portage la Prairie, Manitoba (1981–1984), Goose Bay, Labrador (1984–1985), and again Portage la Prairie (1985–1992) until the base closed.

Paul took great pride in his work and the life he built through his years in the Air Force as an Air Traffic Controller. He was known for his strong work ethic, reliability, and the lifelong friendships he formed along the way. Those who knew him will remember his quiet strength, steady presence, and willingness to always lend a helping hand.

He also had a deep love for sharing stories from his years of service, especially moments from search and rescue operations and close calls in challenging conditions. He often spoke with humility and detail about these experiences, not to highlight danger, but to honor the teamwork, skill, and trust that carried crews safely through difficult situations. His stories became a way of passing down history, connection, and respect for the people he served alongside.

After retiring for one day, Paul returned to work briefly with THA and later with SERCO, where he continued until his final retirement.

Throughout his life, Paul was a very dedicated member of Alcoholics Anonymous. He not only found strength in the program but also gave back by helping others. Paul was always willing to listen without judgment, offer support, and share his experiences with those who needed it most. His compassion, honesty, and commitment to helping others made a lasting impact on many lives.

Paul will be lovingly remembered by his children: Rhonda (Jeff), Richard (Sandra), and Jacqueline (Rob); his cherished grandchildren: Justin, Josh, Rhianne, Sophie, and Evan; and his sister Liz (Bob) as well as extended family Wayne (Jean), Sandra, Rob (Lori), and Joan.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to his close friend Jim, who watched over Paul with unwavering care and compassion.
