Richard "Dick" Walker

January 20, 1921 — September 2, 2017

Richard “Dick” Walker

With great sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Dick Walker at the age of 96 years at the Portage District General Hospital  on Saturday, September 2, 2017.

Predeceased by his loving wife Betty in 2016,  his parents Harold and Alice Walker, his sister Molly (Eldon) Cheater, his son Allen and daughter Sally, Dick is survived by his daughters Barbara Walker of  Macdonald, MB and Leah Kidston (Tim Rumancik), granddaughter Alana (Doug) McAuley with great-grandchildren Kylie and Walker, grandson Jason (Bridgette) Walker with great-grandsons Carson, Cohen and Carter, granddaughter Codie Kidston, daughter-in-law Dianne Walker, all of Portage la Prairie, MB, and sister Margaret Bell of Belleville, ON, as well as several nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Dick was a quiet man of simple tastes.  Farming and family was all that really mattered to him.  He was proud to say that, at the age of 96, he was still living on the same farm that he was born on in 1921.  Dick was a self-taught handyman that could fix anything on the farm, in the house or on a camper.  He enjoyed good health and was able to farm well into his mid-eighties. In his retirement, he kept active mowing a huge yard, planting and tending a big vegetable garden, and tinkering in his shop. His mind was as sharp as a tack right to the end, probably because he was a whiz at crosswords, cryptograms and jigsaw puzzles, as well as cards and board games.  Dick was an avid sports fan and never missed a curling match or Toronto Blue Jays game on TV.

At Dick’s request, there will be no formal funeral service. Cremation has taken place, and a private interment will be held in the family plot at Longburn Cemetery.

If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made in Dick’s memory to the Longburn Cemetery Fund, c/o Brad Knight, RR1 Box 24, Macdonald, MB R0H 0S0, or to a charity of one’s choice.

A tree will be planted in memory and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel.  204-857-4021 www.mckenziesportagefuneralchapel.com
