Robert "Bob" MacAulay

August 19, 1938 — May 6, 2019

Robert “Bob” MacAulay passed away on Monday, May 6, 2019 at the Portage District General Hospital at the age of 80 years.

Bob was born on August 19, 1938 to Lester and Ida MacAulay of Pictou, NS.  He always said he was born in his grandmother’s front parlour.

He joined the Air Force in 1955 at the age of 17 and was stationed in Portage la Prairie, MB in 1956.  He left the Air Force after 3 years and was employed at MDC as a psychiatric nurse and then Unit Supervisor.  Bob worked there for 37 and a half years.

In 1958 he married Cecilia and they celebrated 60 years of marriage together.  They raised four sons, Brent, Scott, Dana and Kelly, as well as for daughters-in-law, Tanis, Gale, Debbie and Laurie – Bob loved his sons very much and always felt that the girls were like daughters and loved them too. Bob was the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren, Nigel (Caleigh), Devin, Aaron (Julie), Hollie, Nathan, Katrina, Ewan and Alyssa. He enjoyed every little achievement they had – big or small. Then came the “greats” Ellianna, Hurley, Owen, Sookie and Calynn. He could not believe that we were so lucky to have great-grandchildren. He was Grandpa Bob to them.

In his younger years, he fished and hunted, but always said the fishing and hunting in Manitoba could not hold a match to the hunting and fishing in Nova Scotia.

Bob loved to dance, to go camping and golfing (although he really didn’t like to golf), and in his later years he enjoyed his yard, the birds and his vegetable garden. He had an ongoing fight with the dandelions. He also enjoyed his years in Yuma, AZ in our little “Home in the Sun”.

Bob was predeceased by his father and mother as well as his brother Harold and sister-in-law Margaret.

Bob is survived by Cecilia (who never did understand his ‘jokes’), two brothers, Donald (Marlene) and Milton (Claudette) and sister-in-law Pam as well as many nephews and his special niece Wendy.

At Bob’s request, no formal funeral will be held.

We will never forget you, Bob, and you will always be loved.

If friends so desire, donations may be made in Bob’s memory to Sunset Palliative Care Inc, Box 92, Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 3B2 or to Cancer Care Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.

A tree will be planted in memory and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel.  204-857-4021 www.mckenziesportagefuneralchapel.com
