It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of “Sandy” Sandra Dawn Chappellaz on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at the age of 52, with her loving family by her side at Portage District General Hospital.
Born in Beausejour, Manitoba, on February 17, 1974, Sandy was the cherished youngest child of Edward and Elaine Hudyma. Growing up alongside her sisters, Shelley and Sheri, and her brother, Kevin, she developed the strength, resilience, and sense of humour that would become such a big part of who she was.
Sandy found the love of her life in Richard “Fuzz” Chappellaz. Together, they shared more than 25 wonderful years filled with laughter, adventure, unconditional love, and countless memories. Their relationship was built on friendship, loyalty, and always standing by each other’s side. Richard lovingly welcomed Sandy’s sons, Tyler and Brett Nagam, into his heart, raising and caring for them as his own from the time they were young boys. Together, they built a beautiful family founded on love, support, and devotion.
Sandy devoted 25 years of her career to MDC, where she made lifelong friendships and left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of working alongside her. Her dedication, strong work ethic, and caring nature were qualities that made her truly special.
If you knew Sandy, you knew she was unforgettable. She was strong-willed, honest, determined, and never afraid to speak her mind. She could be stubborn and lovingly bossy, but behind that was one of the kindest hearts you could ever know. Her smile, laughter, and ability to make people feel like family will never be forgotten.
Sandy loved the simple things that made life special. She enjoyed travelling with Richard, getting lost in a good book, watching movies and television shows, and spending time with the people she loved. Her furry “son,” Axel, held a very special place in her heart and was her loyal companion who brought her endless love and happiness. She treasured bingo nights, dancing, and singing with anyone she cherished most, creating memories filled with laughter, joy, and love.
She was predeceased by her father, Edward Hudyma; her brother, Kevin Hudyma; her beloved Baba, Lillian Hudyma; and her faithful companion, Lucky.
Left to cherish her memory are her devoted husband, Richard Chappellaz; her beloved sons, Tyler and Brett Nagam; her cherished four-legged “son,” Axel; her loving mother, Elaine Hudyma; her sisters, Shelley (Jason) Smith and Sheri (Ken) Kucharsky; her nieces and nephews Michael (Angel), Stephanie (Mimmo), Lyle (Leanne) and Ashley (Dusty); her great-nieces and great-nephews Heidi, Mia, Paolo, Massimo, Darlyn, and Josie.
Sandy’s greatest gift was the love she gave to those around her. She reminded us that strength and kindness can live together, and that the moments shared with the people we love are the ones that matter most. Her laughter, her honesty, and her unforgettable personality will continue to live on through the memories she created and the lives she touched.
Although our hearts are broken, we find comfort in the love she shared, the memories she created, and the lasting impact she left on everyone who knew her.
She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
