Stephen George Lukey

September 29, 1959 — November 19, 2025

Peacefully with family by his side, Steve Lukey passed away on November 19, 2025 at the age of 66 years.

Steve was born on September 29, 1959 in Canora, Saskatchewan to Paul and Sylvia (Bebenek) Lukey. He grew up in the Arabella area until 1971 they then moved to the Melmore District on the Derkatch Homestead along with his 2 siblings, Robert and Sonia. Dad attended school in Arabella for grade 1 then was bused to Norquay school for grade 2 to 10. He enjoyed curling and baseball, he worked for various local farmers and family during his younger years.

He started his carpentry trade for Fleetwood Homes, in Benito Manitoba.

In spring of 1979, Dad and Mom moved to Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. He started working for Vust Construction. Summer of 1978 Dad and Mom married. Welcomed Nicole in 1983, Joseph in 1985, and Tyler in 1988.

Dad worked various construction jobs locally including Doty Construction, Ellwood-McRorie Ltd.. He drove truck for various companies including one of our families local company, Blaine Gillespie Trucking. He built houses for George, Gail Core and their family, who are considered our family. He had his own business in construction. He helped other close good friends, who we consider family with renovations and plannings of their houses (Ron and Dorothy Link, Wayne and Brenda O’Neil, Edward and Suzanne Stoughton). (Sorry if I missed anyone in there). His last job was with Newton Enterprises (Rona, Portage la Prairie), where he was there Job Site Superintendent. Working in Northern Ontario building airport terminals, Northern Manitoba building homes and RCMP houses. He built lots of local businesses and homes along with houses and offices for local reservations, he became close with the locals while working there and close with lots that worked with, with Newton Enterprises (Rona Portage la Prairie).

Dad and Mom took us camping, fishing, on many adventures, even just for drives to check out and show us things he had built. He coached his kids baseball and was always there to drive Nicole to her ball tournaments when she played Provincial ball. He always helped his kids and grandkids with anything he could including renovating their homes. In his younger years he also enjoyed hunting. His kids and grandchildren are his pride and joy. He loved hearing about what they were up to and doing. We can’t forget his hair lip line.

Dad and Wayne O’Neil went on a big skidooing trip to Yellowstone National Park, which brought him lots of memories that he would share with his family.

He enjoyed taking Nicole and Tyler back home to Saskatchewan many times per year to celebrate holidays, birthdays, weddings, other celebrations, fishing, camping, or just to visit his brother (Robert), his sister (Sonia), brother in law (Conard), sister in law (Kathy) aunts, uncles, nieces nephews and their families, and family in-laws, which he grew up with as well. He would play his music and replay it over and over again.

Dad helped Uncle Blaine, Auntie Georgie Gillespie and their family. Uncle and Dad would go sucker fishing, hunting and all kinds of projects in between including building the big addition on their house. Uncle Blaine always said “if you wanted something built correctly, Dad was the one for the job”.

Enjoyed going out for coffee and catching up with lots of his friends and thanks to Alvin for always lending that helping hand.

He is remembered by his former wife, Linda, with whom he shared many years of marriage and children with. Though life led them on different paths, they remained connected through their children and families. His long time best friends and extended family Ron and Dorothy Link, George and Gail Core, Karen Foster and Alvin.

He is dearly missed and loved by all who knew and loved him. Stephen (Steve) was predeceased by his son, Joseph, parents Paul (Purnell) Sylvia, grandparents Mike and Agnes Lukey and Joseph and Natalia (Tillie) Bebenek.

Steve is survived by his children Nicole (Terry), Tyler (Stephanie), grandchildren Blayse, Maiyah (Malachi), Conner, Donovan and Scarlette, brother Robert (Kathy), sister Sonia (Conard), uncle David (Pauline) Bebenek, and numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, extended families, best friends and friends.
