Teresa Fergus (nee Baryluk)

October 19, 1938 — January 29, 2024

Peacefully, on January 29, 2024 Teresa Fergus passed away.

Teresa leaves behind her children Kathleen (Andrew), Maureen, Nick (Maureen) and Tim (Karin), her beloved grandchildren Hannah, Sophie, Sam, Sara, Liam, Jasmine and Crystal, her brothers John (Elsie), Lionel and Bill, and many nieces and a nephew. She is predeceased by her father Nick, her mother Joan, her brother Andy and her sisters-in-law Joan and Colleen.

Teresa was born in Stuartburn, Manitoba where her family owned a flour mill. When Teresa was young, they moved to Winnipeg and she grew up in the north end where she attended Aberdeen School and St. John’s High School. Over the years, Teresa worked at Woolworths on Selkirk Avenue, as a bank teller at the Bank of Montreal, at both the Assiniboine and Manitoba Teachers Credit Unions, and as a Religious Education coordinator at St. Mary’s Cathedral. But she also enjoyed learning and believed so strongly in the value of education that she eventually obtained her GED and went on to take courses at the University of Winnipeg at the same time as her children were there. During the last few years of her life, she lived in Portage La Prairie, where she was incredibly well cared for by Kathleen and Andrew.

Teresa was quick to laugh, and she had a warmth and generosity of spirit that could take your breath away. Her home was always open to any family member who needed a place to stay and she was always the first to offer to lend a helping hand in times of need. She accepted people for exactly who they were, and when it came to being happy for the good fortune and accomplishments of others, she led by example. She was a wonderful mother and mother-in-law, a devoted Baba, a supportive sister and a good friend. She loved her family fiercely and there is nothing she wouldn’t have done for any one of them.

She was a light in the lives of everyone who knew her and she will be dearly missed.

A tree will be planted in memory and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel. www.mckenziesportagefuneralchapel.com
