William Dirks, age 84, passed away peacefully at home on May 21, 2026.
Born on November 4, 1941, to Abram and Anna Dirks, William lived a life rooted in hard work, family, and the farm he loved so dearly. For 17 years he farmed the land he was proud to call his own and later worked in manufacturing and as a taxi driver before enjoying retirement in Portage la Prairie.
William had a deep love for his horses and spent countless hours caring for them and working alongside them on the farm. He especially enjoyed riding his tractor around the property and creating memories with his family. Some of the family’s most treasured memories were the rides he would take them on using the handmade wagon and sled he built himself, pulled by his beloved horses. He was happiest outdoors, surrounded by the land, animals, and people he loved.
To his children and grandchildren, William was a source of warmth, kindness, and unconditional love. He was always there with toonies for Slurpees, and the grandchildren fondly remember searching through couch cushions for the loose change and mints that had fallen from his pockets. He had the warmest laugh, the kindest smile, and gave the very best hugs. Generous beyond measure, he was always ready to lend a hand, offer support, or share what he had with others. He was the perfect example of a man who could be both gentle and firm, leading with quiet strength, wisdom, and love. He knew where he stood as a sinner before God, and his humbleness before Christ and love for the Lord produced fruit in his life that made him the honourable man he was.
Above all else, William loved his family. He was immensely proud of his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, his farm, and the life he built through dedication and perseverance. Some of the family’s most cherished moments were simply gathering together at his home, sharing meals, stories, laughter, and conversation. He always made sure his children and grandchildren knew how deeply they were loved.
William is lovingly remembered by his wife Mary; children Ronnie Dirks and Larry Dirks; grandchildren Ashley Dirks (Danny Bulischak), Robin (Andrew) Beuckert, Matthew Dirks, Benjamin (Marissa) Dirks, Jeffery Dirks, Anna Dirks, Vanessa Dirks, and Aubrey Dirks; eight great-grandchildren; brother Henry Dirks and sister Clara Hamm; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
William was predeceased by his beloved daughter Sandra Dirks; sisters Frieda, Mary, and Sophie; and brothers Ed and Walter.
William’s strength, kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for his family will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew him.
