William "Bill" Paterson

September 5, 1948 — February 10, 2018

Suddenly, on February 10, 2018, Bill passed away at Portage District General Hospital at the age of 69 years.

Bill was born September 5, 1948 in Portage la Prairie, MB, where he spent his life. He was predeceased by his father Guthrie, father-in-law Doc and 2 brothers-in-law, Phil and Bob.

Bill is survived by his wife Nora, mother Gladys, mother-in-law Leny, sisters Lesley, Lauren (Barry) and Patti (Phil, sisters-in-law Maria (Trevor), Alice, Magghie (Gail) and Lynn (Harvey), and brother-in-law Eddie (Barb), as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces and special lifelong friends.

Bill will also be missed by his seven blended children, Marlee (Renè), Tricia (Patrick), Connie, Kim (Brad), Wil (Marnie), Steve (Tina), and Tracee, the mother of his children, Pat, as well as 19 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Bill was born into a farming family and spent many years farming with his dad, obtaining his certificate in agriculture along the way. In later years, he tried his luck as an entrepreneur with Paterson Sales. He then worked at the Transport Department at Southport until the base closed. In the early 1990’s, Bill went to work for MASC and retired in 2013.

Bill was a very caring person with a great sense of humor, always ready with a smile or a good laugh.  His motto was “If you didn’t learn from your mistakes, there was no point in making them, and if you didn’t make mistakes you weren’t learning anything.” He was a great teacher to anyone who wanted to learn, and prided himself on being a fair man.

Bill’s passion was curling, and he was proud to wear the “Buffalo” on his back. After retiring from the game, he became the great armchair skip, never missing a shot.

A Celebration of Bill’s life will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, February 16, 2018 at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill’s memory to the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba, 3rd Floor, 1031 Portage Ave, Winnipeg, MB, R3G OR8.
