We are deeply sorry for your loss - the staff at McKenzie's Portage Funeral Chapel
On Saturday, May 21, 2022, Lanny Merrick passed away at his home, Manitoba Developmental Centre in Portage la Prairie, MB, at the age of 62 years.
Lanny was predeceased by his parents Margaret and Daniel Merrick and sister Heather.
Left to mourn Lanny are his family at MDC, siblings (sister) BJ Briggs (Don), (sister) Lynne Wiley, (brother) Charles Merrick (Glenda), (brother) Dale Merrick, (sister) Danelle Fulawka (Leo), (sister) Shawne Cook (Jason) and many aunts, uncles, cousins and nieces and nephews.
Lanny was born in Winnipeg MB, October 23, 1959. At an early age it was discovered that Lanny was developmentally handicapped thus he became our mother’s “special child”.
Lanny was admitted to St. Amant Centre in Winnipeg and up until our mothers illness she and our whole family visited him weekly. After her death in 1966, Lanny was transferred in 1968 to the Manitoba Developmental Centre in Portage la Prairie that became his home for the next 54 years.
As our family has spread across Canada from BC to Ontario, making a trip to Portage was difficult for most. It has been a comfort to our family that Lanny has been a part of the MDC family all of these years.
Although his life was different from ours due to his disabilities, Lanny lived a very full life. He enjoyed the many activities such as canteen time and dances and celebrations. He loved music and his long walks outside in the summer. Sandy Haven was a special time at the lake in the summers. Lanny especially liked his coffee, and chocolate bars and flapper pie. One of his most exciting excursions was when he got an opportunity to attend a Jets game in Winnipeg. He was so excited and clapped to the music and cheered for every goal.
Our family would like to thank all of the staff at MDC for their care and love they have shared with Lanny all of these years. They enriched his life and in turn ours.
Lanny has passed from the arms of his MDC family back to the arms of our mother. Rest in peace sweet boy. We love you.
