Loreen Smith

November 16, 1941 — January 23, 2022

Peacefully on January 23, 2022, at the age of 80, Loreen Smith passed away. Predeceased by her beloved husband, Vernie Smith, parents Angus and Doris McAuley, and brother Arnold McAuley.

Survived by her four children, Doris Bartsch (Denis/Son-in Law, Walter), Vernon Smith, Ronald Smith (Chantel), and Ann Lowry (Bruce).

She also leaves her treasured memory to her nine grandchildren: Rhea, Danielle, Emma, Lucassie, Tatianna, Cole, Shelby, Marcus, Aaron, and Bradley and one great grandchild, Kolton. Along with many nieces and nephews, she is survived by her loving siblings, Sadie (John), Russel (Grace), Catherine (Jack), Casey (Jackie), and Ray. Special mention to her friends Patty, Donna, Irene, and Helen for their friendship and support.

Loreen was born on November 16, 1941, in Sandy Bay First Nation, MB. She was a Residential School survivor; however, it was her faith and belief in God that guided her life and allowed her to build a loving life and family with her husband Vernie. Life without Vernie was difficult, however, she enjoyed volunteering at Prairie Welcome House where she formed many incredible friendships.

Loreen and Vernie opened their home and hearts to many foster children and took pride in their property at the Manitoba Narrows, where they lived for 10 memorable years before moving to Portage.

Loreen enjoyed going on road trips and adventures with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchild, Kolton. She was a brilliant storyteller and relished in connecting with extended family to exchange stories. Loreen had a strong personality, a great sense of humor, and found joy in having a big glass of wine around the bonfire. Before she passed, she was talking about going to a party and that her husband, Vernie was on his way, and now they are together, forever.

When we can safely gather, a celebration of life will be planned in Loreen’s honor. As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Loreen’s memory to Cancer Care Manitoba, 1160-675 McDermot Avenue Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.

A tree will be planted in memory and cared for by McKenzie Portage Funeral Chapel.
