Marian Johanson

January 12, 1924 — March 1, 2020

Peacefully on March 1, 2020 at the Portage District General Hospital with her family at her side, Marian passed away at the age of 96 years.

Marian was born on January 12, 1924 in Winnipeg and she was the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Carson.  She grew up on the family farm and when she was eight years old her mother passed away and dear friends Jack and Elizabeth Urquhart were a great support to her.  She spent many of her school holidays with them in Winnipeg.  She attended North Lakeland School and high school in Langruth.

In 1947 Marian married Thorstein (Steine) Johanson and they farmed in the Hollywood District before retiring to Portage la Prairie in 1981.  In 2004 she and Steine celebrated the commemoration of the centennial of the family farm.

Marian was predeceased by her husband of over 60 years, Steine.  She was predeceased by her parents, her mother Elizabeth in 1932 and her father Joseph in 1966, an infant sister and three brothers, William (Leona), Robert (Margaret) and Ernest (Nellie).

Marian is survived by her daughter, Judy, her son Murray and wife Linda, her grandson Trevor (Jenneth) and great-grandsons Wyndham and William and great-granddaughter Rebekah, her granddaughter Haylee and great-grandson Logan and great-granddaughter Rosemary, her sister-in-law Lois Johanson and many nieces and nephews.

Marian was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved family get-togethers and was always there for her family.  She liked to garden, knit, and do other handicrafts.  She enjoyed quilting and was an avid curling and baseball fan.  She and Steine enjoyed traveling, including trips to England, Iceland, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, the United States and Canada.

After Marian moved to Portage, she did volunteer work at the Herman Prior Center and the Portage Hospital as well as other charity organizations in Portage.  She was a member of the Langruth Legion Auxiliary No. 162 for many years.

The family would like to thank Dr. Hunter at the Portage District General Hospital and Dr. Hildebrand at the St. Boniface Hospital for their wonderful care of Mom and also the staff at Gladstone Health Center and the Lions Prairie Manor in Portage la Prairie for their compassionate care of Mom.

A funeral service will take place on Friday, March 6th at 2:00 pm at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel at 56 Royal Road S. in Portage la Prairie.  A private family interment will take place at the Langruth Cemetery at a later date.

Flowers are gratefully declined and as an expression of sympathy if friends so wish, a donation in Marian’s memory may sent to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald St. Winnipeg, MB, R3L 0K6 or the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, North Central Region, 218 Saskatchewan Ave. E.
